One thing I've learned from my PhD application process is how important research fit really is. Reaching out to potential advisors and demonstrating alignment through prior research experience can strengthen one's application (especially when it comes to funding decisions).
Also, don't hesitate to reach out to faculty members respectfully. It's completely normal not to receive a response, as professors receive numerous emails each day. Still, responses do come through from time to time, and they may offer helpful insights/advice for future direction.
