由於大學不是讀CS的，所以當初抱著「全滅後在台灣蹲1–2年RA」的心情在準備申請。換句話說，當時我沒有設定保底學校。
選校上，當初我排除(1)四大、(2)需要GRE、(3)研究方向不符合、(4)網頁明確寫不接受deferral的學校(因為要當兵)，並考量US news和CS ranking的排名。我主打的研究方向是ML (robustness, representation theory), explainable AI和medical AI。對做medical AI的老師來說，我或許是個適合的人選，畢竟一邊讀MD一邊發ICLR的學生不多。後來的經驗也許證實這點：UofT和Cornell的面試老師都是做medical AI的(，尤其Cornell Tech的CS未來貌似要和其醫學院有更緊密的合作)。
我也想分享一位學長給的(犀利的)建議： 1.「這些頂尖大學已經看了一百份長春藤CS背景的application，為什麼要多花一點心思在你身上？你有什麼特點？」 2.「SOP最主要的重點是purpose，交代你為什麼想要去，以及他們為什麼要收你」以及 3.「說服他們你已經有一定的能力，並且他們也可以offer相關的幫助，要盡可能把這幾個角度align起來」
